From Baltimore, Maryland to Holzminden, Germany, two independent artists have bridged five time zones to create a new transatlantic sound. In this episode of Derringer Discoveries , Paul and Alton sit down with Katie Tich and UAP (Dr. Rainer Aschemeier) -- the duo behind ROSEBUDTHORN -- to explore how their collaboration grew from remote songwriting into a full-fledged band.

Katie , a returning Honorary Derringer, shares her journey as an indie singer-songwriter and discusses two of her recent solo releases: Crossfire and her newest track, Stress Dreams . UAP , a retrowave/ synthwave producer and host of Let’s Talk Synth… Seriously! , reflects on his prolific catalog, including collaborations with Color Theory , Mikotron , and &Tilly , plus his recent soundtrack project. He also spotlights his signature solo song, City Be Your Monster , which captures the essence of his retro-synth style.

Before forming ROSEBUDTHORN , Katie and UAP released a collaborative album called Transatlantic , which featured Talita -- the very first track born from their partnership. While they have not yet released a full album as ROSEBUDTHORN , they highlight their latest single Reflection in this episode, a song that blends Katie’s layered acoustic guitars with UAP’s synth-driven soundscapes and Hammond-style organ flourishes.

Oasis , the iconic English rock band, was formed in Manchester in 1991. Led by the Gallagher brothers, Liam and Noel, the band became one of the defining acts of the Britpop genre. Their debut album, Definitely Maybe (1994), was a massive success and became the fastest-selling debut album in British history at the time. They followed this with (What's the Story) Morning Glory? It's not exactly "shield your grandma's ears" material, but it's certainly not kindergarten fare. Consider this episode to have a "PG-13" rating—there's a bit of mischief, but all in good fun. Our squeaky-clean reputation? Well, it's taking a tiny holiday!

If you're not offended by what you hear, you might just find yourself laughing along with us. Has Derringer Discoveries turned into a comedy podcast? With the hitmaker Dean Friedman joining us, the answer is definitely "Yes!" If you don't find yourself chuckling during this episode, it might be time to check if your internal laugh meter is functioning properly.

Additionally, we delve into Dean Friedman 's 2005 UK tour, which nearly came to a halt due to a cannabis controversy! Can you say scandalous? Indeed, it was so scandalous that 39 of the 40 venues canceled upon learning of Dean's plans! We give a shout-out to the one venue in Scotland that supported Dean amidst the uproar.

A song so troubling that, in 1982, it was actually banned by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and it derailed Dean 's career.

Furthermore, we reflect on Dean 's illustrious 47+ year career in the music business, minus the 20 years he was exiled on a remote desert island (well, not an actual desert island - just New Jersey) after being banned by the BBC in 1982.

Besides the US and Canada Top 40 hit "Ariel," Dean also scored two Top 40 hits in the UK, with one reaching #3 in 1978. Interestingly, the same song banned by the BBC in 1982 was covered by Canada's Barenaked Ladies and then it became a US Top 40 hit for another recording artist! That artist took it all the way to #1 in Norway.

What happens next after you've written a #1 hit? Well, if you're Dean , you license the song to one of the biggest corporations in the world and it becomes a major radio and television commercial.

To seal the deal, Dean agreed to revise the age of the person with whom the protagonist is in love, even though they were originally both the same age! Furthermore, you can no longer identify anyone in the song as a virgin. Gone is the purity! And no more polyester, which is how Dean described the clothing worn by the employee in the original version!

U.S. listeners have likely heard the commercial, a snippet of which is included in this episode. It's best enjoyed with a cup of coffee, which will become clear upon listening.

Team Derringer is joined by recording artist Tilly Simon of the band &Tilly to count down Tilly’s Top 5 favorite songs by the band Blink-182 . The pop-punk band, Blink-182, formed in Poway, California [US] in 1992 and quickly rose to fame – especially with surfers, snowboarders, and skateboarders.

The band is renowned for its high-energy live shows and their adolescent humor. Comprised of bassist/vocalist Mark Hopper, guitarist/vocalist Tom DeLonge, and drummer Travis Barker, the band is experiencing a resurgence in popularity having just tied a record for the largest number of weeks at #1 on the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart. Blink-182 ’s 2023 hit, ONE MORE TIME , ties Portugal. The Man ’s 2017 song, Feel It Still . Both songs spent 20 weeks atop the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart, however, ONE MORE TIME remained at #1 for 20 consecutive weeks from the time of its release while Feel It Still sat atop the chart off and on from June to December of 2017.

EP55: Foo Fighters

After the tragic demise of one of the most critically acclaimed grunge bands of the early 1990s, a new music project arose. Originally intended as a solo endeavor by a talented multi-instrumentalist (and former Nirvana drummer), Dave Grohl, the debut Foo Fighters album captured the interest of music industry executives.

Grohl had intended the Foo Fighters moniker to provide him with a bit of anonymity; however, he soon realized that a full band would soon be required to support the attention-grabbing endeavor. Slowly a full line-up of talented musicians coalesced around its founding member and primary songwriter.

By the time the band released its sophomore album, they were landing singles on music charts worldwide. Over the years, the Foo Fighters have won more than 10 Grammy Awards and continue to crank out chart topping singles and terrific – and often humorous – supporting videos.

In this episode, Team Derringer is joined by long-time friend and music super-fan, DP Derringer . Join the crew as they recap the founding of the Foo Fighters and explore their all-time favorite Foo Fighters songs.

EP54: The Cowsills

From 1970 to 1974, for 96 episodes, there was a wildly popular musical sitcom television show that aired in the United States. The show was called The Partridge Family .

It was a fictional American family who played music together, but The Partridge Family was based on a real-life family: The Cowsills . The Cowsills were comprised of siblings Bill, Barry, Bob, Paul, John, Susan, and Paul, along with their mother Barbara.

Founded in 1965, the family band had eight singles in the US that charted on the Billboard Hot 100 . They produced their signature family harmonies for over five decades releasing their latest album, Rhythm of the World , in 2022.

Bob, Paul, Susan, and their band, still perform over 60 live shows a year, and since 2015, have appeared annually on the Happy Together Tour with The Turtles and several other popular 60s-era bands. ( Get your tickets now! )

In this episode, Team Derringer (Laura, Alton, and Paul) are joined by an award-winning artist from Toronto, Canada: Julian Taylor . Julian has been part of the Canadian music scene for over 25 years – from his high school years busking in the streets of Toronto; to his time touring Canada with his popular rock band, Staggered Crossing (StagX); and now, his Juno-nominated solo work along with his touring ensemble, the Julian Taylor Band .

Team Derringer counts down their Top 5 favorite songs by Julian Taylor (so far) while Julian interweaves stories from his childhood, young adulthood, and now fatherhood. EP49: Plant & Krauss: Raising the Bar w/ Special Guest Matt Saxton

In this episode, Team Derringer explores a rare juxtaposition: the improbable convergence of two highly disparate styles of music. In 2004, two luminaries in their respective genres came together to make magic. One is a dynamic frontman for one of the most well-known rock bands of all time, while the other is a highly sought-after collaborator, solo artist, and leader of an extremely popular bluegrass band.

In 2007, Alison Krauss and Robert Plant released their Grammy-winning album, Raising Sand . The critically acclaimed pairing produced studio gold which later turned into platinum. Fourteen years later, the duo released their second album, Raise the Roof . Could they replicate the magic? Listen in to find out!

EP47: Tina Boonstra - Perpetual Beginner

Growing up the child of missionary parents, Tina Boonstra moved from the UK, to the Netherlands, to South Africa, and then back to the UK. The transient nature of her childhood prevented Tina from feeling a sense of belonging and she often felt insulated from the outside world. To entertain herself, she played music with her family members and wrote her first song at age 11. She blossomed as a musician shortly after university when her friend's brother, a music producer, wanted to record her.

Tina expected her songs to find their home in the church halls she was so familiar with, but she soon found herself performing the open mic circuit in and around London. After connecting with producer Trevor Michael, Tina found her musical voice and solidly established her sound. Tina is a master storyteller. Her songs run the gamut from deeply painful experiences to the hope one can find in the simple things of life.

From the mid-1960s to the early 1970s, there was a large counterculture movement in the United States. It was a time when the war in Vietnam was escalating and there was vast social tension in society overall. But it was also a time of free love, experimentation, alternative lifestyles, and some terrific music!

It was from an area just outside of Los Angeles, California – an area known as Laurel Canyon – that Rock and Roll’s first supergroup arose: Crosby, Still, Nash & Young.

Indie recording artist Jon Tyler Wiley joins Team Derringer as they debate when and where the founding members of CSN first lifted their voices in harmony. EP45: The Beatles' Best: 1962-1965

If you're a long-time Derringer Discoveries listener, you'll recall that In Episode 19 , we weighed in on The Beatles' 10 Worst Songs . In response to that episode, Sammy Vulcano , a solo recording artist from the Syracuse, New York (US) area, reached out to Team Derringer .

Sammy shared that he is a superfan of The Beatles. He told Team Derringer that he had recently combined his songwriting talents with those of his lifelong friend and fellow musician, Anthony Micaroni , to write, record, and release a trilogy of songs about The Beatles from 1962 to 1965.

Intrigued by this concept, Team Derringer decided to explore the collaboration between Sammy and Anthony and invited them to join Team Derringer (Paul, Dave, Laura, and Alton) as they delve into this period of The Beatles' legacy -- a time which is often overshadowed by the brilliance of The Beatles' catalog released after 1965. Assisted by special guests Sammy and Anthony, Team Derringer shares the tale of The Beatles in Hamburg in 1962, along with snippets of their biggest hits from 1962 to 1965.

The Beatles only had one hit in 1962 and it was only in the UK. They didn't conquer US until January 1964, but by 1965, they were toppling the music charts worldwide. Join Team Derringer and their guests as they discover obscure, interesting trivia about The Beatles. Along the way, you'll hear snippets of The Beatles' two hit singles sung with German lyrics. Additionally, Team Derringer, Sammy, and Anthony will discuss Kurt Cobain 's posthumous hit single, a cover of Sammy's favorite 1963 song by The Beatles. Kurt's cover has streamed almost 59 million times!

And of course, Team Derringer will play snippets of the trilogy of songs by Sammy and Anthony that sparked the idea for this episode. These three songs by Sammy Vulcano and Anthony Micaroni are available on all the major digital streaming platforms, such as Spotify.

EP44: A Tribute to John Prine with Jeff Sweatman

In this Derringer Discoveries episode, we honor legendary American songwriter John Prine . John’s songs were often humorous and witty – sometimes they were rebellious and full of social commentary on everyday life in America. He regaled us with his music from the early 70s until his death on April 7, 2020, from COVID-related complications. This episode is a tribute to Mr. Prine – a Chicago postman turned modern-day troubadour.

Team Derringer is joined by Jeff Sweatman who spearheaded a tribute album to John Prine that featured over 20 artists’ interpretations of John’s hits. The project culminated on October 23, 2022, with a fantastic outdoor concert in Charlottesville, Virginia, attended by over 700 fans. Almost all the artists featured on the album performed for the sold-out crowd. The album is aptly named, All the Best… from 6 Feet Away: A Charlottesville Tribute to John Prine .

Jeff shares the background behind five of Team Derringer’s favorite songs from the album and explains what he sees for the future of radio, having been a radio disc jockey and producer for over 30 years.

EP40: Bowie to The Vow

In the late 1960s, a young Graham Trust from Liverpool, England, learned the foundations of vocal performance from his father, a well-respected community choirmaster. As young Graham grew, he was enthralled with the angst-ridden sound of the punk bands blaring from the radio – in particular those played by BBC Radio 2 ’s renowned disc jockey, John Peel .

As a teenager, Graham combined his love of vocal harmonies with the sounds of the burgeoning punk scene and founded a post-punk band with schoolmates, notably a lad named Martyn Gilbert. From 1989 to 1991, Graham, Martyn, and drummer Tony Potter achieved regional fame performing as the band, The Vow – but it was only a short time later that the band split up.

During the ensuing years, Graham continued to hone his craft as a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist and followed his passion for music. Having built a large portfolio of promising original songs and now having the resources required for proper recording and music production, thanks to steady employment in the corporate world, he entered the recording studio in 2008 with the intent to share his musical creations with the world.

Writing all the songs, performing all the vocals, and recording many of the instruments, The Vow is the brainchild of Graham Trust. Through the years he has enlisted a revolving roster of musicians, including his former mates Martyn Gilbert, Tony Potter, and onetime bassist Nick Reynolds. Joining Graham on recent recordings is producer, musician, and studio owner, Simon Denny - favored for his orchestral arrangements.

In this episode, Graham Trust of The Vow joins Team Derringer to discuss his fascination with songcraft, his early musical influences – including The Jam – and his latest song, Dude for David , a musical tribute to David Bowie . Team Derringer counts down their top five favorite songs by The Vow and, with very little effort, coaxes Graham into sharing the history of each.

EP39: Ukraine's In.Vade

While the world has watched in horror at Russia’s evil invasion of Ukraine, the people of Ukraine fight for victory but wish for peace. Still, out of the chaos of war comes compelling music.

In this episode, Team Derringer had the honor and pleasure of interviewing a Kyiv-based rock band, In.Vade , featuring guitarist-producer Ilia Kaplunenko and vocalist Elisabeth (Lisa) Shefer. The interview took place via Zoom on September 5, 2022. At the time of our interview, the war was relatively distant from Kyiv; however, since then, Russia has launched artillery into civilian areas of major Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv.

Team Derringer (Paul, Laura, Alton, and Dave) share their top five songs by In.Vade while Ilia and Lisa reveal the history and creative processes behind creating their music. Hear their musical influences and learn how they even wrote a song with plans for a major Ukrainian artist to sing and record with them… unbeknownst to him at the time.

Is it true that, up until now, Paul Derringer has resisted covering the legendary Roy Orbison simply because Paul has trouble saying Orbison's first name? Is it also true that Jeremy Lublin of Jeremy & The Harlequins from Brooklyn, New York, forced Paul's hand by requesting to be paired with Orbison for this episode? EP36: Posthumously Prince

In this episode, Team Derringer discusses an artist that was one of the greatest, if not the greatest, of his generation. With his death in April 2016 of a fentanyl overdose, Prince left his fans wondering if he could have ever reclaimed the pinnacle of success he enjoyed during the 1980s. Prince left behind a vault of unreleased music. Prospects of hidden gems reside in Prince’s vault – a literal vault of music beneath his Minneapolis-based Paisley Park Studios – which contains thousands -- possibly tens of thousands -- of unreleased songs.

Prince’s estate has already begun releasing music found in Prince’s vault. Team Derringer - Laura, Alton, Dave, and Paul - speculates on whether the music lives up to the Purple One’s high standards and whether any rare gems will be uncovered. The Team also weighs in on the re-packaged and re-released live music from Prince’s 1985 concert at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York, “ Prince and The Revolution: Live .” From there, the Team debates the merits of live vs. studio albums and each team member shares their favorite live album.

In this episode, Team Derringer - Laura, Alton, Dave, and Paul - commemorates the recent 50th Anniversary re-release of The Doors' classic album: L.A. Woman . Many listeners will readily know the hits from that album: "Love Her Madly" and "Riders on the Storm." Plus, the catch phrase "Mister mojo rising" from the title track.

But Derringer Discoveries decides to forego an exploration of The Doors in favor of focusing on an L.A. band called Livingmore , featuring Alex Moore and Spencer Livingston. Alex gave Derringer Discoveries two exclusive interviews, providing fascinating insight into Livingmore's songwriting process.

As a result, Livingmore supersedes The Doors, becoming the featured artist for Episode 35. EP34: Life After Rush

For over 40 years, the band Rush defined progressive rock. Often far from the mainstream, they made their own way by pushing back against management, the record industry, and even their own fans.

In this episode, Derringer Discoveries welcomes longtime friend and Rush super-fan, John B. Derringer (via Zoom) to help the team discuss what the surviving members of Rush , Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee, have been doing since the passing of their long-time drummer and lyricist, Neil Peart. Also, Team Derringer chooses their favorite Rush songs from the band’s immense catalog and Rush aficionado, John B. Derringer weighs in on each member’s selection. John even shares a couple of his favorites as well!

Post Episode Bonus: MAIAH WYNNE

In March of 2022, Derringer Discoveries had the privilege of interviewing Maiah Wynne , a talented singer/songwriter/actor and, most recently, lead singer of Envy of None ! Originally intended to be a loosely knit musical collaboration between Maiah Wynne and former Coney Hatch bassist, Andy Curran, the project soon grew into a full-fledged band once Curran’s friend and former Rush guitarist, Alex Lifeson , joined the band.

Team Derringer interviewed Maiah just prior to the release of Envy of None’s eponymous album . Maiah joined Derringer Discoveries via Zoom from a remote town in Montana where she was on the set of a movie in production.

Her original songs, collaborations, and covers run the gamut of indie-ballads to heavy hard rock. Maiah has won many national and international contests during her career and has developed songs and videos in support of the Apollo moon landing, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Education for young boys and girls as well as such worthy causes as mental health awareness and MMIW USA ( Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women USA ).

In this episode, you'll hear how Maiah got started as a musician, about her David vs. Goliath battle with Lionsgate Entertainment Corporation, and her plans to release an upcoming album of her own original compositions.

EP33: Genesis vs. Gabriel

Between formation in 1967 until 1977, the English progressive rock band Genesis lost a total of eight band members. By 1977, they were down to three: keyboardist Tony Banks; bassist/guitarist Mike Rutherford; and drummer/singer Phil Collins. These are the three who, in 1977, shot to worldwide superstar status, peaking in 1991 after securing 17 now-classic hits in the interim. These are the same three musicians who, in March 2022, played their final live performance, thus bringing Genesis to an end after 55 years of on and off and on-again existence.

Meanwhile, one of the eight members who departed Genesis in the early years was Peter Gabriel who also had a stellar career, giving the world an impressive number of now-classic hit songs. In this episode, you will learn which #1 hit by Gabriel knocked a song by Genesis out of the #1 spot on the music charts. Think about this: An artist knocked his former band out of the #1 spot. How many times in the history of Rock & Roll has this happened? Listeners: Exactly once! Listen up to find out which two songs were involved.

As you will hear in this episode, pundits have long held that music lovers cannot be both a Genesis fan and a Gabriel fan. The kitchen-sink logic is that you either love Genesis or you love Gabriel. You cannot love both because they are diametrically opposed.

EP32: Erin & The Wildfire

In this Derringer Discoveries Rising Star episode, we highlight powerhouse singer Erin Lunsford and her terrific band, The Wildfire. Erin & The Wildfire are gaining fans and followers up and down the East Coast and beyond with their awesome vocals, excellent musicianship, positive message, and high energy live shows.

Erin grew up in a small town in southwestern Virginia playing music around the area with her mom, a guitar teacher. It was upon moving away to college, the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, that she met her future friends and bandmates.

Seeking a larger market, the group eventually moved to Richmond, Virginia, and still considers the city their home base. Erin & The Wildfire are veterans of mid-Atlantic music festivals having RoosterWalk, FloydFest, and nearby LOCK’N Festival. They have shared NPR’s Mountain Stage with many notable acts.

Their much-anticipated sophomore album, Touch Feely, is scheduled to drop on April 1, 2022. Many of the songs on the album are deeply personal and will resonate with many listeners. The band focuses on self-acceptance, body positivity, and life happiness through their catchy, uplifting songs.

In this episode, Team Derringer shows support for Ukraine by sharing some of Ukraine's excellent rock and pop music with our listeners.

With much appreciated help from Kyiv-based recording artist Pasha Black, Team Derringer starts with Ukraine's two Eurovision winners, one from 2004 and the other from 2016. Then, the Derringers reveal seven compelling Ukrainian Songs by seven Ukrainian recording artists, along with interesting insight on each featured artist and song.

In this episode, we all come together to listen to and support Ukraine. No one will Jump the Shark and no one will Cross the Rubicon . And since we are featuring nine Ukrainian recording artists (two Eurovision winners plus seven others), there is no Post-Episode Bonus .

EP30: Will Creedence Reunite?

How long is too long? In Episode 28 , Derringer Discoveries covered a band that reunited with all four original members after a 40-year break. Now, for this episode, the band under the microscope is Creedence Clearwater Revival, also known as Creedence or CCR. They have been separated for 50 years!

CCR's line-up was Tom Fogerty, John Fogerty, Stu Cook, and Doug "Cosmo" Clifford. Tom was John's older brother. CCR broke up in 1972, not long after Tom quit the band.

Even though they have not been a functioning band for 50 years, they are still one of the Top 300 bands in the world, based on Spotify listeners. Without a doubt, you will know their songs. They even had a hit with Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" from their biggest selling album, Cosmo's Factory.

Tom has been dead since 1990. The other three have been estranged since 1972. In this episode, Team Derringer - Laura, Alton, Paul, and Dave - undertake five tasks:

In this Derringer Discoveries episode, we spotlight the careers of two exceptional artists from New Zealand. Both are prolific songwriters. Both are excellent musicians. Both have highly successful solo careers. Both have been (and still are) members of world-renowned bands - sometimes together, sometimes separately. Did we mention that they are siblings? In our Post-Episode Bonus, we spotlight an extremely talented singer/songwriter/producer who goes by the moniker, Orion and the Melted Crayons . Orion Redwolf Faruque started playing music as a child in his mom’s church band. He has traveled the country while flirting with the punk, jazz, and metal genres. His journey began in Charlottesville, Virginia, and temporarily landed him in Minneapolis. Moving on from there, he explored the music scene in Cuba, later found himself on a mountain top in Asheville, North Carolina, and finally returned to Charlottesville to pursue his musical dreams.

EP28: ABBA - Sweden's Biggest Export: Reunited After 40 Years!

The Derringer Brothers - Alton, Dave, and Paul - welcome a new member to the team: Laura Derringer. They are now The Derringers (or Team Derringer).

At Derringer Discoveries, we usually don’t talk about Money, Money, Money, which happens to be a hit song by ABBA , the world-renowned pop rock band featured in this episode. However, since ABBA is from Stockholm, Sweden, the very same place that is home to Spotify , the Derringers have been vigorously debating which entity is the bigger Swedish export: ABBA or Spotify!

Going against Spotify is the fact that, in FY2020, they posted a €581 million loss and FY2021 is not yet public. Listeners, that’s euros (€), not dollars ($) or pounds (£). You don’t need us to tell you that a euro is worth more than a dollar or a pound!

In ABBA’s corner, the following three factors give them a financial edge:

The four members of ABBA are each worth about €150 million;
When they do absolutely nothing at all, they still manage to generate €2.5 million in royalties every single year and have done so for the past 40 years. Ironically, a lot of the euros have come from Spotify in recent years; and
They recently reunited after a 40-year break-up and their presence on the world stage is about to explode (insert exploding noise here!) starting in late-May 2022.

To celebrate the return of ABBA, the Derringers will undertake the following five tasks:

Reveal ABBA's Top Seven songs, as selected by ABBA-superfan Vivian and the four members of ABBA, as well as listener streams on Spotify;
Review the album Voyage , ABBA's first new collection in 40 years, and their upcoming ABBA-tar tour, scheduled to start in May 2022;
Consider whether Agnetha or Frida is the better singer;
Answer whether or not ABBA Jumped the Shark; and
Did they Cross the Rubicon?

The Derringers will relay interesting trivia, such as:

For a band that has had such a large impact on pop culture for the last decade, Lord Huron has remained under-the-radar of many music listeners. Starting out in Michigan as the brainchild of Ben Schneider, a multi-talented artist, Lord Huron has become a hugely influential indie rock band whose music has appeared in numerous films, commercials, television shows, and in series for NBC, The CW, Netflix, HBO, and Showtime. Their songs have also appeared on music charts worldwide.

Based out of their own Whispering Pines studio in Los Angeles, California, Lord Huron – now composed of Schneider and his former high school bandmates – continue to generate wonderfully inventive music. However, here at Derringer Discoveries, we cater to the entire world and worldwide, Bowie had 11 Number One hit singles while he was living and one more Number One hit single posthumously.

Listen up as two of The Derringer Brothers - Alton and Paul - discuss and play snippets from all of Bowie's Number One hits from around the world while covering his "classic period" from 1969 to 1986. EP23: Toad the Wet Sprocket: Not Just Another 90s Band & Why

Almost 35 years ago, four high school friends bonded over their love for making music – and not just any music. They came right out of the gate making top-notch alternative pop-rock songs but, desperate for a band name prior to their first gig, they jokingly adopted a silly moniker from a Monty Python skit: Toad the Wet Sprocket. It was a joke that went on too long – and it stuck.

In this episode, the Derringer Brothers (Paul and Alton) explore Toad the Wet Sprocket ’s (TTWS) pre-breakup hits from 1989’s Bread and Circus through 1997’s Coil – followed by the band’s 16-year hiatus from recording.

During the “break up years,” the band members stayed in touch, matured, occasionally played music together, and finally put aside their differences to reform sometime during 2010. In 2013, the band released the crowd-funded album, New Constellation , proving that the band’s fans were still around and longing for new TTWS music. The band’s 2016 EP, Architect of the Ruin , followed.

The Derringer Brothers recap seeing TTWS on tour over the last few years and explore their top three favorite songs from Toad’s latest album, Starting Now. How does the album compare to classic Toad? Discover why the Derringer brothers believe Toad the Wet Sprocket’s music has transcended the years and is as excellent today as it was throughout the 90s.

Since 2006, Taylor Swift has released 179 songs spanning nine studio albums. Now that she has regained the copyrights to her first five albums, she is re-recording them one by one. You will know the new ones by the caption Taylor's Version in parentheses after each re-recorded song title.

In this Derringer Discoveries episode, Paul Derringer is joined by Rylan Derringer who is subbing for Dave Derringer. While counting down his Top 10 favorite Taylor Swift songs, Paul provides insight into copyrights versus phonographic rights and why Taylor is re-recording Taylor Swift (2006), Fearless (2008), Speak Now (2010), Red (2012), and 1989 (2014).

In this episode of Derringer Discoveries, Paul & Dave Derringer are joined by two special guests, Augie and Paddy, who take on the Derringer surname as the four discuss The Killers' six studio albums spanning 2004 to 2020 in anticipation of their seventh studio album (See Episode 20 for The Killers' Pressure Machine).

EP15: Ann & Nancy Wilson Are the Heart of Rock & Roll & Why

From 1976 to 1993, the band Heart, featuring Ann & Nancy Wilson, put 20 songs on the American Rock & Roll Top 40 charts. In this episode, Dave Derringer picks and discusses 10 of the 20 hit songs. Dave's 10 are the hits that Ann and/or Nancy had a hand in writing.

While regaling us with the 10 Wilson-penned hits, Dave also relays several interesting stories about Heart, including the one where the band Nazareth unwittingly had a hand in crafting Heart's classic hit "Barracuda." This is why the Derringer Brothers decided to include two of Nazareth's songs on the Ann & Nancy Wilson Playlist .

In true brotherly fashion, Paul Derringer manages to mess with Dave's perfect 10-song strategy by slipping in two additional songs. One song, "Bebe Le Strange," bubbled under the charts at #109. Paul and Dave explain what it means when something "bubbles under," a legitimate Billboard-coined phrase. In addition, Dave explains the definition of "rung" and mockingly credits Paul as being the originator of the phrase "sniffing the charts." Listen up to learn what it means when a band's single climbs a rung and is sniffing the charts. It's actually a good thing!

Paul's second monkey-wrench involves a song written for Ann & Nancy by Martin Page and Elton John's lyricist Bernie Taupin. Not only was this single the first of Heart's two #1 hits, it was also Nancy Wilson's rare opportunity to shine as lead vocalist. Nancy has a good voice, but The Derringer Brothers agree that it's Ann who has one of the best voices in Rock & Roll. Period.

In Part A ( Episode 10 ), Paul & Dave Derringer discussed the first seven years of Fleetwood Mac. In this Part B episode, with help from special guest Kathy, The Derringer Brothers debate the five albums released by the classic Fleetwood Mac line-up consisting of Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood.

In addition to providing the world with some great music, this line-up of Fleetwood Mac - the classic five - also unwittingly became a textbook example of a dysfunctional musical family, a band full of discord, strife, heartbreak, and palpable angst. The classic five increasingly couldn't work together - they couldn't even be in the same room with each other, but the world demanded (and continues to demand) that they each put on a brave face and go out there to give the people what we want.
