EP103: Dan Navarro: The Legacy Behind the 1980s Defining Hit "We Belong"
STRIPPED DOWN, RAW, AND UNCUT WITH DAN NAVARRO (THE UNTOLD STORY OF "WE BELONG")
What happens when a song that defined 1980s radio gets stripped down to just six strings, one voice, and its original, unedited lyrics? Team Derringer gets a front-row seat to rock history with the legend himself, Dan Navarro!
In this episode, Laura, Alton, Rob, and Paul pull back the curtain on one of the most iconic songs of the 1980s: “We Belong.” You know it, you’ve sang it at the top of your lungs in the car, and you’ve heard Pat Benatar belt it out on MTV. But do you know the story of how it was born?
Enter Dan Navarro.
Long before "We Belong" became a No. 5 Billboard smash and a Grammy-nominated rock anthem, Dan Navarro and his late, great musical partner Eric Lowen were working as singing waiters in Los Angeles. That chance meeting spark led to the formation of Lowen & Navarro, an acoustic folk-rock duo renowned for their tight two-part harmonies, relentless touring (over 1,500 shows!), and songwriting chops that caught the ear of everyone from The Bangles and Dionne Warwick to The Temptations and David Lee Roth.
In this exclusive episode, Dan sits down with Team Derringer, and he brought his guitar!
Right in front of our mics, Dan performs “We Belong” from start to finish: just Dan and his acoustic guitar. This isn't the slick, heavily produced stadium track you know from 80s radio. You’re hearing the song in its rawest, purest form, complete with the original lyrics Dan wrote before Pat Benatar and her guitarist/collaborator Neil Giraldo shaped it into a global rock hit. It is a rare, spine-tingling glimpse into the creative process of how a song transitions from a heartfelt acoustic sketch into a generational anthem.
Key Track Highlights & Trivia Nuggets
- The Original Lyric Cut: Hear how the song's original phrasing and perspective felt before Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo brought their signature hard-rock polish to the arrangement.
- From Plates to Platinum: Lowen & Navarro met while serving food and harmonizing between tables at LA's legendary Great American Food and Beverage Company. Talk about a true "hustle-to-hitmaker" journey!
- A Heart of Courage: After Eric Lowen was diagnosed with ALS in 2004, the duo continued to tour and inspire fans for years. Since Eric's passing in 2012, Dan has kept that creative flame burning brightly as a solo artist and champion for ALS awareness.
- The Voice Behind Your Favorite Screen Moments: Beyond songwriting, Dan’s voice can be heard everywhere, from blockbuster animated hits like Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and The Lorax to epic video games like Red Dead Redemption 2!
- Guitar Royalty Running in the Family: Yes, the Navarro family tree is stacked with serious string talent! Dan is the first cousin of Jane's Addiction and Red Hot Chili Peppers' former axe-master Dave Navarro.
